Strathbogie’s Tree Removal Experts

Milone’s Tree Solutions provides thoughtful tree work across Strathbogie’s granite country, farming properties and townships, including Euroa, Nagambie, Avenel, Violet Town and Longwood. Our qualified arborists draw on 20+ years’ experience to deliver safe tree removal, precise tree trimming and efficient stump grinding.

For storm damage and urgent hazards, our emergency tree services team can help assess the situation. We also provide practical guidance on local council regulations and appropriate tree lopping so work is scoped around the controls that apply to your property.

Understanding Strathbogie Shire Council Tree Protection Requirements

Strathbogie Shire advises that planning approval may be needed to remove, destroy or lop vegetation on public or private land. The key triggers are Victorian native vegetation, planning overlays and any vegetation conditions on an existing planning permit. There is no private-land tree permit under the Community Local Law and no standalone significant-tree register; Heritage Overlay schedules provide the operative protection for significant trees at listed heritage places.

When You Need a Permit

A planning permit may be needed when:

  • Native vegetation, including dead native vegetation, is proposed for removal, destruction or lopping under Clause 52.17, unless a listed exemption applies.
  • The property is in VPO1 Lovers Hill Avenel, where all native vegetation is protected, including the listed grassy woodland communities.
  • The property is in VPO2 Significant Remnant Indigenous Vegetation, which regulates removal, destruction or lopping of indigenous vegetation.
  • The land is affected by the Erosion Management Overlay, which can require a permit for any vegetation, native or exotic.
  • A planning permit already issued for the site contains vegetation conditions.
  • The site is a Heritage Overlay place where tree controls apply.
  • Under the new statewide Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees provision (introduced 15 September 2025), a planning permit is also required to remove, destroy or lop established canopy trees (over 5 metres tall with a trunk circumference over 0.5 metres and a canopy of 4 metres or more) in most residential zones.

When a Permit May Not Be Required

An exemption may apply in defined circumstances:

  • In designated bushfire prone areas, the 10/30 and 10/50 provisions can allow any vegetation, including trees, within 10 metres of an eligible accommodation building, plus vegetation other than trees within the applicable 30- or 50-metre distance.
  • Dead native vegetation can be exempt, except a standing dead tree with a trunk diameter of 40 cm or more at 1.3 metres above ground.
  • Emergency works may remove only the part of vegetation that presents an immediate risk of injury or property damage.
  • Maintenance pruning may be exempt if no more than one-third of a plant’s foliage is lopped or pruned, subject to the Clause 52.17 limitations.
  • VPO2 does not require a permit for exotic vegetation.

However, we always recommend contacting Strathbogie Shire Council or consulting with our professional arborists to confirm whether a permit is required for your specific situation.

Note: trees on nature strips, road reserves and parks are managed by Strathbogie Shire Council. Report concerns about council-managed trees to council rather than arranging private works.

Strathbogie Shire Council Permit Application Process

Permit fees vary according to the application and Council confirms current charges. Strathbogie’s published 2025/26 schedule does not list a specific vegetation-removal planning fee; statutory planning permit fees are regulated separately.

How to Apply

Start with the Vegetation Removal page and complete the Native Vegetation Removal Request form so Council can identify the approvals required. Then use Planning Permits to check mapping, apply, pay and track the application through the Greenlight portal. Include clear species information, measurements, the reason for removal, photos and an arborist report; VPO1 applications also need detailed clearing, site and avoidance information. Milone’s Tree Solutions can prepare a comprehensive arborist report to support your application, and our tree removal permit advice service can guide you through the process.

Common Trees Across Strathbogie Shire

Strathbogie’s native trees often remain as woodland patches on farmland and as linear remnants beside roads, rail corridors and stream frontages. That makes species identification and the exact overlay especially important before tree work.

  • White Box: This tree is part of the critically endangered White Box–Yellow Box–Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland protected at Lovers Hill, Avenel.
  • Yellow Box: Yellow Box occurs in the same critically endangered grassy woodland community at Lovers Hill.
  • Blakely’s Red Gum: This is another component of the protected White Box–Yellow Box–Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland.
  • Grey Box (Eucalyptus microcarpa): Grey Box Grassy Woodlands of south-eastern Australia are identified as endangered in the VPO1 vegetation description.
  • Yellow Gum (Eucalyptus leucoxylon): Yellow Gum is on Council’s approved list of trees indigenous to the area.
  • Drooping She-oak (Allocasuarina verticillata): This indigenous species is also included in Council’s approved street-tree list.
