Casey’s Tree Removal Experts

Milone’s Tree Solutions supports properties across Berwick, Clyde North, Narre Warren, Hampton Park and Cranbourne, where established vegetation and fast-growing residential areas meet. Our qualified arborists bring more than 20 years’ experience to council-aware tree work.

We offer carefully managed tree removal, ongoing tree trimming and practical stump grinding. If a tree has failed or requires an urgent response, our emergency tree services can help assess the immediate issue and organise safe works. We also provide clear information on local council regulations and the kind of work commonly called tree lopping.

Understanding City of Casey Tree Protection Requirements

Casey requires a planning permit to remove or prune a tree on private property when an overlay applies, the tree meets the canopy-tree definition or a property larger than 4,000 m² contains native vegetation. Casey also manages a Significant Tree Register with around 1,864 significant trees, including River Red Gums and seven Avenues of Honour. Check the Council’s tree removal and pruning guidance for the controls on your property.

When You Need a Permit

A planning permit may be needed if:

  • the land is affected by an Environmental Significance Overlay, Vegetation Protection Overlay, Significant Landscape Overlay or Heritage Overlay;
  • the property is larger than 4,000 m² and contains native vegetation;
  • the tree is a canopy tree over 5 m high, with a canopy diameter of at least 4 m and a trunk circumference greater than 0.5 m measured 1.4 m above ground;
  • Clause 52.37 applies, including its vacant-lot and dwelling-boundary triggers in residential zones other than Low Density Residential;
  • other property-specific planning controls apply, which can be checked through VicPlan or Council’s planning team.

When a Permit May Not Be Required

Casey identifies several limited exemptions:

  • Only the hazardous part of a tree that presents an immediate risk of failure within 48 hours may be removed.
  • Minor pruning or removal of dead branches that does not affect the tree’s health or structure does not require a permit.
  • Pruning required for safety clearance near powerlines, where done by the relevant authority, does not require a permit.
  • Certain environmental weed species may be removed without a permit.
  • The 10/30 bushfire rule has specific requirements for eligible accommodation buildings in a designated Bushfire Prone Area, while the 10/50 rule applies only in areas identified by the Bushfire Management Overlay.

However, we always recommend contacting City of Casey or consulting with our professional arborists to confirm whether a permit is required for your specific situation.

Note: trees on nature strips, road reserves and parks are managed by City of Casey. Report concerns about council-managed trees to council rather than arranging private works.

City of Casey Permit Application Process

Casey does not publish a tree-specific removal fee. Its 2026–27 statutory schedule lists the following VicSmart fees:

  • $233.10 where the estimated cost of development is $10,000 or less.
  • $500.80 where the estimated cost of development is more than $10,000.
  • $233.10 for other VicSmart classes.

How to Apply

Apply through Council’s Applying for a planning permit page, using the separate tree-removal guidance to check whether a permit is needed. Casey identifies a completed application form, site plan showing the tree location, tree details, the reason for removal or pruning and an arborist report where required. Include clear tree species, measurements and photographs so the proposal can be understood. Milone’s Tree Solutions can prepare a comprehensive arborist report to support your application, and our tree removal permit advice service can guide you through the process.

If in doubt, or for the avoidance of doubt, Milone’s Tree Solutions strongly advises all customers to conduct their own due diligence and contact their local council directly to confirm whether permits, consents or approvals are required before proceeding with any tree works. Common Trees Across the City of Casey

Casey’s significant-tree work records River Red Gums, other native species and notable exotic trees. In a growth corridor, identifying a tree early helps determine whether an overlay, register entry or site condition needs to be considered before removal or development work.

  • River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis): Casey identifies this as its flagship species, and the tree is protected under ESO7.
  • Rough-barked Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis subsp. pryoriana): a species named in Casey’s Significant Tree Register and strategy.
  • English Oak (Quercus robur): one of the recorded significant-tree species in the municipality.
  • Pin Oak (Quercus palustris): a designated ESO8 species in the Significant Tree Strategy.
  • Dutch Elm (Ulmus × hollandica): documented in the Significant Tree Register and strategy.
  • Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla): a significant-tree species recorded by Casey.
